In 2017, Capita Networking Solutions, part of IT and Networks, was awarded a contract by NATS to provide network connectivity to UK air traffic control services, which handles 2.4 million flights and 250 million passengers every year.
Formerly known as National Air Traffic Services, NATS is the UK's leading provider of air traffic control services. The contract, which is due to go live in 2020, is worth £15m over seven years with a three-year option to extend and will provide the critical national infrastructure through Wide Area Network (WAN) connectivity to support NATS’ new IP based voice services being delivered across UK airways.

The new IT infrastructure is an integral part of NATS’ commitment towards SESAR, the Single European Sky ATM Research programme, which aims to develop technologies to enhance European airspace performance – increasing capacity, improving safety, reducing delays and airline costs, and reducing environmental impacts.
A contract of this magnitude is not without its challenges however, and Executive Director for IT and Networks, Joe Hemming recently spoke to CEO Magazine about how those challenges are redefining the bond between client and customer.
